Eid is one of the most joyous celebrations in the Islamic calendar, marked by food, family, and festivities! Whether you’re celebrating yourself or just curious to learn more, here’s everything you need to know about this special occasion.

What is Eid?
There are actually two Eids in Islam; Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Fitr (aka the ‘Festival of Breaking the Fast’) comes after the holy month of Ramadan and is a time of gratitude, charity, and feasting.
Eid al-Adha (aka the ‘Festival of Sacrifice’) happens a couple of months later and honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It’s also when many Muslims perform Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Both Eids are celebrated with prayers, gatherings, and (of course) lots of delicious food!

How Do People Celebrate Eid?
Morning prayers: The day starts with a special Eid prayer at the mosque or an open field.
New clothes & dressing up: Many people wear their best outfits, often brand-new ones, for the occasion.
Feasting & sharing food: Traditional dishes vary from country to country, but sweets like baklava, kunafa, and maamoul are always a hit!
Charity & giving back: It’s customary to give to those in need, known as Zakat al-Fitr during Eid al-Fitr and Qurbani (sacrificial charity) during Eid al-Adha.
Family, friends & fun: Eid is all about spending quality time with loved ones, exchanging gifts, and enjoying the festive atmosphere.
How Can You Get Involved?
If you’re not Muslim but want to join in on the celebrations, here are some ways to do so:
Wish your Muslim friends ‘Eid Mubarak’ (which means ‘Blessed Eid’)
Join in a communal Eid event or feast (many mosques host open gatherings)
Learn about the significance of the occasion and its traditions
Try some Eid treats!
Eid is a time of joy, unity, and reflection. Whether you’re celebrating or just learning about it, it’s a great reminder of the importance of kindness, gratitude, and community.
Eid Mubarak to all who celebrate!
